Is Slack Down? Check Messages, Login and Connectivity

Diagnose Slack failures across messages, login, notifications, files and huddles. Compare clients and networks before deciding it is a wider outage.

Reviewed

A quiet Slack window does not necessarily mean your team has stopped talking. The client might be disconnected, notifications might be delayed or one feature might be failing while others work. Start with the action that did not complete.

Check the official Slack System Status page. Read the feature-specific notices and current incident details. This article helps you diagnose the problem; it does not claim to show Slack's live availability or the state of your workspace.

Is Slack down for my workspace or everyone?

Ask a teammate through another working channel whether they can perform the same action. Compare the workspace as well as the client. A person using another workspace successfully is useful evidence, but it does not test your organization's login or policy settings.

If possible, compare desktop, browser and mobile behavior after saving unsent messages. Record whether you are testing on the same network. A mobile connection and an office Wi-Fi connection may take different paths.

Keep the exact error, time and affected feature in your note. “Cannot send to this channel” is more useful than “Slack is dead.” If you share a screenshot externally, remove private messages, names and workspace details that are not needed to explain the failure.

Which feature is actually failing?

SymptomUseful comparison
Cannot sign inLogin/SSO, account and organization identity provider.
Messages do not arriveConnectivity and message delivery in another client.
Sent message appears stuckAnother recipient's view and actual delivery state.
No notification appearsMessage arrival separately from notification settings.
Files or search failThose features separately from messaging.
Huddle cannot connectCalling behavior and the network path.

Do not test every feature in a hurry. Choose the one your team needs and compare it carefully. A file upload failure should not lead directly to reinstalling the app if messaging still works.

Can a network issue make Slack look frozen?

Yes. Slack's connection troubleshooting guide explains that WebSocket trouble can prevent new messages from arriving automatically. An old channel view can therefore look normal while it is no longer receiving updates.

Compare a permitted alternative network and involve the network administrator if the issue is limited to a managed connection. Do not disable company security controls as a general fix. The useful evidence is which client and connection combination fails.

Save your draft before a targeted reload. If only the desktop app fails while the browser works, use the browser temporarily and record the difference. That result narrows the investigation without proving that every part of Slack is healthy.

Does a missing notification mean a message was lost?

Check whether the message exists in the conversation before investigating notifications. Delivery and notification display are separate observations. Quiet settings, operating-system permissions or a client-specific issue can affect the alert even when the message arrived.

Use a consenting teammate for a small test message and ask them to confirm receipt through a working route. Avoid sending the same urgent message repeatedly without checking whether earlier attempts arrived.

If messages are present but notifications are absent, communicate that distinction. The team's workaround may be to check a designated channel deliberately rather than abandon Slack completely. If delivery itself is uncertain, move urgent coordination to an agreed fallback.

What if login or SSO fails?

Determine whether you are failing before reaching Slack, during your organization's identity-provider flow or after authentication. An existing signed-in session working does not prove new logins are healthy.

Ask your internal administrator whether the identity provider has a matching issue or policy change. Do not reset passwords or alter organization authentication settings based only on a broad outage rumor. Keep existing working sessions available while the login problem is investigated.

If the official notice concerns login, check its stated scope. It may not imply that already connected users cannot message. That distinction matters when choosing who can relay an update to the rest of the team.

Can huddles, files or search fail independently?

Test them separately from ordinary messaging. For a huddle, compare whether participants can join and whether audio works; those are different steps. For files, distinguish upload from opening an existing file. For search, note whether you can still navigate directly to a known conversation.

Avoid uploading the same large file repeatedly or creating multiple replacement huddles without telling participants where to go. A controlled comparison gives better evidence and creates less cleanup when service returns.

If the failed feature is not essential to urgent coordination, keep using the features you have verified. Your incident message should say which alternatives actually work rather than treating a partial failure as either total availability or total loss.

What do partial outages and public reports tell me?

An official partial incident describes a limited scope, such as a feature or subset of customers. It can still interrupt your whole team's work. Read the latest details instead of interpreting a summary color on its own.

Downdetector and social reports can show similar complaints, but do not confirm cause or delivery of your messages. Compare time, feature and client. See why status pages can disagree with users if the official headline is green while your tests keep failing.

Once you have enough evidence to change the team's workflow, use the Slack outage playbook. Choose one fallback channel, preserve decisions there and reconcile missed messages after recovery. Sending successfully is only half the communication test; someone also needs to receive it.
